Visit Broseley

Broseley was formed as a clearing in the woods in the eleventh century. The town managed to prosper and grow  during the industrial revolution.

Now a small market town,  Broseley is perched above the River Severn and overlooking the Ironbridge Gorge. It offers visitors a quieter but deeply authentic way to explore one of Britain’s most important historic landscapes.

Explore Broseley

With a mix of early industrial, and newer, housing, the town is a centre for tourism, places to eat and stay, and has great access to the beautiful countryside that is Shropshire, with beautiful walks! Its community buildings of the Birchmeadow Centre and the Victoria Hall, along with the churches, pubs, cricket club and Social club, provide an array of things to do.

Local Character

Despite its small size, Broseley has a strong community spirit and a welcoming atmosphere. The town centre features independent shops, cafés, and traditional pubs, many housed in historic buildings. Regular local events, markets, and community activities add to the town’s charm and give visitors a sense of everyday life in a historic Shropshire town.

Industrial Heritage

Broseley played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution. From the 16th century onwards, the town was a centre for coal mining, ironworking, brickmaking, and clay pipe production.

Its industries helped fuel the growth of the Ironbridge Gorge, now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Traces of this past can still be seen in the town’s layout, buildings, and surrounding landscape.

Countryside and Walks

Surrounded by rolling countryside and woodland, Broseley is ideal for walking and outdoor exploration. Footpaths lead down to the River Severn and connect the town to neighbouring villages, offering scenic views across the gorge and the Severn Valley. These walks combine natural beauty with reminders of the area’s industrial past.

The Iron Bridge

The Ironbridge Gorge

Broseley’s location makes it an excellent base for exploring the wider Ironbridge Gorge. The famous Iron Bridge, along with the area’s many museums and historic sites, is just a short walk or drive away.

From Broseley, visitors can easily access Coalport, Jackfield, and Ironbridge while enjoying a more peaceful place to stay or explore
